There is some great free software available. Pricelessware is a reliable site to find the really good programs.

My choices for the Windows environment are IrfanView for an easy out of the box solution and the GIMP for Windows for something a bit more muscular.
My Favorite Sources of Public Domain Images
Here are a few good places to find images which are in the public domain. Always check for copyright information at the site where you found the image.
- http://phil.cdc.gov/phil/default.asp - Centers of Desese Control - Here you can find everything from human parasites to cells. This site might not be suitable for younger students.
- http://www.ent.iastate.edu/imagegal/ - Iowa State Entomology Image Gallery Great bugs (insects) found here!
- http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/ - The NOAA collection spans centuries of time and much of the natural world from the center of the Earth to the surface of the Sun.
